#2 Case Study - Inception ..

Inception Platform Analysis ..

Print ..

An example of a print media is the Inception film poster, they've used a establishing shot for the front cover which is really effective as the background is the city and towards the back the city lifts up, the image clearly represents Leonardo DiCaprio as the main star which is really effective as it's star appeal, he appeals to many people, a lot of his fans would watch this film just because he's staring init. Behind him are other famous people that have their own fans hence attracting a wider audience. From their facial expressions you can tell the genre's action/sci-fi. All the actors names are written on the top in red, Leonardo's name is written much bigger than the other names which shows just how important he is in the film. The title's written in s big bold red font behind a blue background which is really effective as red contrasts with the blue and makes the red standout. For a film poster this is really effective because the title is something the audience see straight away.

The institutional information is written underneath the title in a blue font behind a dark blue almost black background, the information is really important however not as important as the title hence it's in small font on the bottom of the poster. The poster also has the Warner Bro. Pictures icon which is really effective as it's the company's identity hence it would attract people to go watch the film. The film poster is also shown on the website of the film which is synergy as the film posters being promoted on the website. This is quite similar to the Ill Manors film poster as they both contain the codes and conventions of a film poster however I think the Inception film poster is more effective as it would have been promoted much more than Ill Manors.

The demographics of Inception would be around A and B's as the film's complicated, it requires the audience to use their brain therefore it would be too hard for uneducated people to understand, psychographics wise it would be Explores as they look for new things and this film is different, people might watch this film for entertainment and escapism which comes under the uses and gratifications, people might be tried of their  own problems hence might want to escape into a different atmosphere.

Broadcasting ..

This is an interview with a man called Jeremy Jahns, he's very popular for giving film reviews, someone commented below on one of his interviews saying if Jeremy says the film is bad it must be bad which shows just how famous his film reviews are. He's behind a red background, he starts talking about Inception with the Inception film poster on the side, Jeremy explains how Inception saved people's faith in cinema's. He gives a really positive response to the film which is really effective as it persuades the audience to go watch the film. He claims that the film is one of the best ever made, because his tone of voice is so confident it really hints how good the film is. He doesn't speak about the characters however he mentions how excellent the performances of all the actors were, he gives all the actors credit which not only is effective for their careers but it also re-ensures the audience that the film is worth seeing. Obviously Leonardo DiCaprio is the main star so a lot of the credit goes to him, this fans also would make up a lot of the audience which is really effective. Reviews on youtube are really effective as it allows interactivity with the audience as they can leave comments and their own opinions on the film review. In some ways synergy is used as the film poster is shown on the broadcasting review. Other reviews of Ill Manors were also really positive, they both were given good feedback however Inception obviously had better equipment and famous actors who all have their own fans (star appeal).

E-Media ..

This is a facebook page made for the film Inception, the page contains images of the characters, it mentions when their birthdays are, it also has video's that promote the film, then regular updates about the awards the film Inception has one. This is really effective because it persuades people to watch the film, after seeing how successful the film is they'd automatically feel the need to watch the film. The facebook page also shows other pages that are linked to the film that the audience can like, this therefore is really effective because it allows the audience to look at other important pages that the inception film likes. Underneath the name Inception is written the amount of people that have liked the page which works really well as it persuades the audience or people go watch the film because it's so good. The page also mentions the stars birthdays which is really effective as it gives the fans a chance to get involved and wish them happy birthdays, interactivity. Ill Manors also has a lot of interactivity which is really effective because it allows the audience to almost feel as if they're apart of the film. The producers for Inception wouldn't have needed to make a facebook page as they could afford proper promotion however a low budget film like Ill Manors would need social networking sites like facebook to promote their film.

#2 Case Study - Inception ..

#2 Inception Platform Analysis ..

Print ..

This review is an example of Print Media, the Empire Magazine give Inception a positive review on the film which is really effective as it attracts the audience to watch the film, the review also gives credit to Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance in the film thus re-ensuring the audience and his fans that they film is a must see. The review is nice and short which again is really effective because it doesn't bore the audience, it cuts straight to the point which is what the audience want; however if the audience do want to read it in more detail they can click on the button that takes them to the full review. The audience can also rate the film and leave their own reviews on the film, their own opinions. On the top of the review the film is rated 5 stars and on the side the stars are explained, according to the explanations Inception's rated as a classic. Therefore, all the small elements that make up the review contribute to a wider target audience.

From the review, all the stars are represented in a positve away therefore helping them with their career. Leonardo DiCaprio however gets the most praise which is obvious as he's the main star, whichout him the film wouldn't be what it is today. This print review is really effective as it cross promotes (synergy) E-media in the sense that there's buttons which take you to the facebook and twitter pages of the film. Both Ill Manors and Inception had positive feedback from Empire Magazine which is really effective for both films.

Broadcasting ..

This movie premiere is an example of broadcasting media, the fast cuts and sound effects in the beginning of the premiere are really effective as it straight away grabs the audiences attention. The premiere interviews the actors and the director asking them questions about the film and how they felt. As the actors speak, their name comes up with their role or contribution to the film, for example the Director Christopher Nolan is the first to be interviewed and his name and contribution to the film comes up which works well for the audience as they might not know exactly what role the actors have in the film for example.

In this review the actors aren't represented in their character roles but really themselves, who they really are which is really effective for the the audience as they get to see what the actors are like in real life and how different or similar they are to their character roles. The movie premiere (broadcasting media) cross promotes with E-media as it's broadcasting on "E" which is also a website that the audience can visit for more information on the film. Also, the premiere's shown on youtube hence linking it with E-media, synergy. The audience have the chance to get involved and give their own opinion on the film, interactivity. Again comparing this premiere with the Ill Manors premiere, Inception's premiere's located in Hollywood and Ill Manors was located in London obviously the premiere for Inception's would be much more expensive to Ill Manors.

E-Media ..

This fan made video is an example of E-media, E-media allows the audience to get involved with the film thus attracting them to watch the film. The video is about Inception's ending and how it should have ended but with a lot of comedy involved thus amusing the audience. The video starts with the man falling asleep and needing to use the bathroom. A train then goes past and he doesn't need to go toilet anymore. The video links back to the real film through the whole video. Further on in the video a character from Ellen Page's previous movie Juno comes in the dream which could attract many people who enjoyed that film when it was new. It also just make's people laugh which is really effective because it attracts the audience, the target audience for that film Juno is also similar to the target audience of Inception.

The fan made video represents the characters in a different way, a lot of the lines Leonardo DiCaprio says in the video links back to the film hence portraying the same type of man in the film; however the other characters are represented in a funny, more interactivity way. As it's a cartoon it's more likely to attract children, as the film is rated 12A, the fan video is probably aimed to people around that age. The fan video is really effective as it attracts many people however it doesn't cross promote to any other platform therefore lacking the full use of attracting a wider audience. Ill Manors however cross promotes in anyway possible, from the film trailer which is broadcasting being on the official website of Ill Manors which is E-media.

Completed mock exam on the 4th of March.

Achieved Level 4, Grade B+

Feedback from mock exam -
WWW: Excellent understanding of techniques used.
LR: Try to involve more theory (e.g. audience theories like users and gratifications) Write a paragraph doing this.

Targets:
-Clear, well organised & appropriate communication, Engaged response with fluent use of media terminology.
-Confident understanding and application of media ideas/issues/theories/debates

The trailer which comes under broadcasting media promotes the film in a different way to Print or E-media as it's targeted to a different audience in the sense that the trailer provides escapism which is means if the audience is having a rough time the film helps them take their mind of their own problems and escape to a different atmosphere. The trailer also provides entertainment in the sense that the audience get to watch it instead of reading the reviews, they get a visual idea which would persuade them to watch the film, this theory uses and gratifications by Blumler and Katz was made to find out why audiences many engage with the media.

Watch your film and include details about the:

Inception has one of the most complicated narratives, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character Dom who his involved in making dreams to target people in their subconscious mind to extract information while they dream. Their target is a Japanese businessman, as they travel through dreams to get information out of him, this film get so complicated as they dream, and in that dream they’re are dreaming, the only way to get out of the dream is by falling or by dying however if the person who is dreaming wakes up the dream collapses. Throughout most of the film they use dreams to get information out of this businessman, Leonardo however has a family with two kids, he feels after this one mission he’ll be able to go back to his family, his wife committed suicide because she couldn’t take all the dreaming and now any dream Leonardo has his wife is in them.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character role and is represented in a typical dominant male role, the man in power, in charge of everything. The producers have used mis-en-scene through props to represent Leonardo as the dominant character as he’s always the one carrying the gun, the gun also is a typical genre convention as the genre of this film contains action. In most of the film Leonardo’s represented in a suit, he’s always dressed smart which portrays him in a successful way. They’ve used mis-en-scene through makeup to show his wealth and health, through most of the film he looks clean which shows he has the money to take care of himself, for example he isn’t suffering financially.

In this one clip both Leonardo and another actors is sitting at a cafe talking, they’re set in a dream, the location in that scene is set in a dream which means they control everything that happens in that scene hence the place starts blowing up in different places. She then wakes up and they’re back in the real world, this is really effective as it attracts people to watch it because it’s so interesting. The editing contributes to the action; the long shot is really effective as it shows the audience clearly what’s happening in the scene. During that one scene there isn’t much music which doesn’t really affect the scene as its so interesting music isn’t required.

Most of the reviews on IMDb from the users are positive, the title of the review is called "Nolan's first true master piece" it then starts off with someone explaining how Inception is a "perfect" film, it's "confident" in every way, explains how it's something "refreshing" even more than Avatar. The user then says how the film could only have been made by Nolan, it's pure greatness. The users speaks about the last hour of the film, the editing, how there's action shots in almost all scenes. To fully understand the film you have to pay attention and remember all the layers of what's happening which is what makes it such a brilliant film. The user later on speaks about how the film should change Hollywood that's how great it is, this all is really effective as it attracts many people to watch the film, after reading the review they'd be persuaded to watch it.

What are the main similarities and differences in Inception and Ill Manors?

Differences:
  • Ill Manors film budget - £100,000
  • Inception film budget - 160 Million
  • Inception spent 100 million on marketing the film whereas Ill Manors had no money to market the film
  • Distribution for Ill Manors - Revolver Entertainment
  • Distribution for Inception - Warner Bros. Pictures
  • Ill Manors genre - British Crime Drama Film
  • Inception genre - Science Fiction Thriller Film
Similarities:
  • Inception was written by Christopher Nolan who also directed the film
  • Ill Manors was written by Ben Drew who also directed the film
  • Both films were written in English and shown in the United Kingdom
  • They both use star appeal to attract the audience, Ill Manors - Ben Drew, Inception - Leonardo DiCaprio
  • One person edited Inception whereas Ill Manors a few men had to edit it.
  • Inception has a different person who made the music whereas Ill Manors, Plan B the director also did the music
  • The director of Ill Manors is famous compared to the director of Inception

Analysis of the Website and Trailer ..

The official website: Inception official website ..

The website opens straight away with the trailer, after the viewer has seen the trailer the actual website with the information opens. Firstly I think is is really effective as it almost forces the views to watch the trailer thus attracting them to watch the film. This is also synergy in the sense that the E-Media which is the website helps promote the Trailer which is Broadcasting.

The beginning of the trailer shows the production companies which is really successful as it could attract the audience who have taken a liking to Warner Bros. Pictures through other successful box office hits they might have been attracted to. Then the trailer zooms into the production logo and shows Leonardo DiCaprio covered in snow, the fact that they've shown Leonardo first straight away captures a wider audience (star appeal) many people would want to watch the film because he's so famous and has so many fans, many people might just want to watch the film because he's init, he begins to speak saying "there's something you should know about me", then cuts into him walking while holding a gun which hints the genre could involve some sort of action and says "I specialize in a very specific type of security". Once again a close up the gun then cuts to him saying "subconscious security".

Cuts to a close up of another actor who replies "you talking about dreams?" everything else in this shot is blurred apart from him which means all the focus is on him and what he's saying. The background music is really up built, it keeps the audience alert, keeps them focused, the trailer then cuts to the directors name Christopher Nolan in white, bold science fiction font with a plain black background. It then blacks out and as the music makes that "Doom" sound it says "The Directors of The Dark Knight" in the same font as the directors name, this is really effective as The Dark Knight was a really successful film which many people enjoyed hence persuading them to watch Inception because people can also enjoy this film. The trailer then short shots of action scenes which would attract many people who like all that action with the music which creates all the suspense. Leonardo goes on to say "create the world of a dream" as the city looks as if it's folding up which is really interesting, thus attract the audience to watch the film.

Later on in the trailer shows a close up of Leonardo, close up's are really effective as it shows the facial expressions and in this case Leonardo looks worried, panicked which attracts the audience as they'd want to know what's about to happen. Throughout the whole trailer they've put really short shots which keeps the trailer alive as it would be boring having a shot that lasts up to 20 seconds on the trailer. Leonardo's goes on to say "I think I've found a way home" then shows him holding a woman which would be portrayed as his wife that maybe he lost when he was younger, the voice overs make you think "what does that mean?" it raises questions which is really successful for trailers because it keeps the audiences attention. The fact that they've shown Leonardo holding a woman is really effective as it attracts a female audience as well through the romance of those two characters. Another woman is shown in the beginning of the trailer which shows that whatever the men are doing, the women can do it which would attract a female audience as they'd want to be like the women, dominant.

From then on the trailer is just amazing, the music contributes to the action, the action links to the music, Leonardo DiCaprio's name is shown thus attract even more people, then the trailer shows more action shots,  a shot where an explosive goes off thus attracting people who like those types of action films, Leonardo then says how you feel as if the dream is real until you wake up and you realize it was just a dream. This would confuse the audience therefore making them want to watch it just to understand what they mean, the film plays with your mind and the trailer hints that. You then see Leonardo shouting at someone, this shows his angry side which would attract more female fans of his, he shouts how it was his responsibility which makes the audience think well why is he so angry and what was his responsibility? It raises so many questions hence this trailer is so successful because it creates suspense.

The trailer then shows more science fiction shots of building on the beach falling, people asleep spinning around in the air, this all makes the audience think what's going on? It confuses them thus attracting them to watch the film to then understand what everything's happening. Then the music makes that "Doom" sound and the name of the film comes up "Inception" in a clear science fiction font therefore clearly displaying the genre of the film. The shot changes to someone shooting and another man coming behind him with a bigger gun and shooting which has a better effect that the other persons gun, as the second man shoots the trailer cuts straight to "Coming soon" which is really effective because it's the last thing everyone sees hence it remains in their head for longer.

The website then opens with the front cover of the film poster which is synergy again though E-Media, the website promoting the Film Poster (Print). They've used 3 main colours, red, white and blue which is really effective as all those colours are vibrant and they all work together. Most of the actors are standing there holding guns which shows dominant representations of men, that men are more powerful hence they have to hold the big guns. Also, the title is in a big, bold red being the blue which shows contrast and the opposite of blue is red hence they work well together. All the characters names are placed on the top in red and white again behind the blue background. The music of the website matches the trailer therefore it keeps the dramatic suspense throughout the website as well as the trailer, also when you scroll over the buttons it makes that "Doom" sound which is clear continuity between the trailer and website.

Just on top of Inception is the Menu button, once you've clicked on that it opens 6 more options which are all typical codes and conventions of websites, first button is about the film once you click on the button it takes you through the city of Inception, as it's going through the city it shows you clips of the film which is really effective as it keeps them entertained, it almost flies through it all to get to the page I clicked on to show me the narrative of the film, as the narrative is being explained it also speaks about the institutional information and the director Christopher Nolan. This website is incredibly detailed, it also speak about each character and other films they've played in, it also speaks about them as actors and awards they've one. This is really effective as it would attract a wider audience through star appeal, reading about the actors awards and success would persuade them to watch the film as they're such good actors. The website also shows information about the crew, the people who made the film, as I said above this website has so much information about the film, if the audience have any doubts on the film - the website would clear those doubts, the graphics on the website as so clear, this website is amazing.

The second buttons called "Video" where it shows three trailer and the world premiere, to begin with, this is really effective as firstly it's synergy, putting the broadcasting media on the E-media which is cross promotion, it also attracts more people therefore a wider audience, overall I think the world premiere would attract people more as it's like the review, it promotes the film and you get to speak to the actors, find out how they felt making the film and so on. The three trailers all have the same effect, it's just they all have different feels which is what the audience want, before the audience watch the film they watch the trailers which keeps them entertained, it keeps the audience hyped up, keeps them interested.

The website also had a button named "Downloads" which means the film has spinoff's, which means even after the film's been shown, they still make money through spinoff's in this case they have screensavers from Inception for your laptop or computer. The last button is the Gallery which is basically images from the film, the first image is a close up of the main star Leonardo DiCaprio, obviously they'd want that to be the first image as Leonardo DiCaprio is so famous and you know if he's staring in the film, the film has to be amazing. The other images show a lot of the action or science fiction scenes which again would attract many people as they'd be attracted to all the action as it looks interesting.

Overall, I think the website is amazing, the button in the top corner allows you to make the website full screen which gives the audience the full effect. The website contributes to the film, it cross promotes though E-media and Broadcasting, there's games attached to the website which opens the audience age group more as children can play the games and feel as if they're apart of the film, all the action and science fiction. At the bottom on the website shows a facebook link thus attract teenagers through social networking sites, this film therefore uses all three platforms to the full to promote the film.

MEST1 Cross Media Study ..

How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?

How are characters/stars in the film represented in:

Print Media, print promoting the Ill Manors album produced by Ben Drew. On the album, Plan B's sitting on a wall with a hoodie, straight away that connotes street life and young youths which are some dominant sterotypes of how teenagers are portrayed in the media nowadays; however in other print products when Plan B wears suits and is dressed smartly he's represented in a more formal, well mannered man. Plan B has a cigarette in his hand which he is in the middle of smoking, the producers used Mise-en-scene though props really effectively here as it represents Plan B as a hoodrat, maybe someone who hasn't done well in life, someone of a lower class. Towards the ending of the film Plan B's shown driving the taxi, the audience don't see his full face but just this eyes  (cameo) which is unfortunate as the characters facial expressions say a lot about their character however it still creates excitement and enigma codes

Broadcasting media though interviews doesn't really represent the actors in their characters but who they really are. Riz Ahmed and Anouska Mond speak about their roles in the film and how they were portrayed. In the film Anouska's represented as a prostitute, prostituting for money to then go and buy drugs thus creating stereotypes of women who live in council estates and wearing revealing clothes which makes the audience think females nowadays are represented in that negative way. Riz's a young male in the film whose a drug dealer but you can tell from the way he is he's been forced into all of this maybe from his upbringing. All the male's in the film are represented as the dominant characters and the woman are used and abused by them, this is a dominant representation for men to be more powerful than woman and woman are below men.

E-media, teaser trailer which is promoted on YouTube, Youtube promotes both the film and the album which is cross promotion (synergy) to attract a wider audience to both the film and the album. The teaser trailer has a link which takes you to Plan B's music video which then gives the audience a chance to find out more about the institutions of the film. As the trailers a teaser, it's only 10 minutes long however that's really good because it attracts the audience to want to watch the film in the cinema to then find out what the film is about (narrative). Towards the ending you see police men handling a bunch of loud teenagers which is  a dominant representation of how teenagers are represented, loud and dangerous

Now look at what values and ideologies are communicated within these representations

Ben Drew uses his film to put across his message about young teenagers and society not caring about them because they're brought up in less wealthy areas such as council estates with no education. From interviews with Ben Drew the audience get to understand his ideas and values for the film the audience get to understand whys he's represented the characters in a certain way. He also explains why he made the film, to make a difference in society, because of the media young kids are portrayed in a negative way. Plan B uses his film to create awareness of council estates and to prove that most of the stereotypes made about young kids from the media aren't true.

Now think of how the film communicates with audiences across the 3 platforms

Ben Drew uses his characters to communicate with the audience as many people from the audience can relate to the characters, a lot of the stereotypes in the film have been broken which is what Plan B wanted
to achieve. All most all of the characters in the film come from poor backgrounds and are from a working class background which is exactly what Plan B wanted because he wants the audience to be able to relate to them and that cannot be achieved with famous, rich actors.

MEST1 Cross Media Study ..

How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?

Who are the film's target audiences and how do you know? How is the film promoted to its target audiences through: Print? Broadcasting? E-media?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/jun/07/ill-manors-review

The target audience for Ill Manors are more males than females and because the film contains a lot of violence, strong language and sexual scenes the bbfc rated the certificate of the film 18, as the genre of the film is action/crime/urban the age group would be around 18 to 36 years old. The TEDx lecture also highlighted a different type of audience for the film. Most of the audience from the lecture are of a middle class mostly journalists and others who were interested in the film and that type of genre. The Observer magazine about the film Ill Manors is targeted to more of a secondary audience, similarly to the audience in the TEDx lectures. The articles speaks about the narrative of the film, informs the audience about the genre, the ideas etc which is useful as it attracts the audience to watch the film.

The red carpet premiere was where they hosted interviews with the characters, asking them about the film and how they felt playing their roles, this allows the audience to find out about the characters and how they're completely different to the way they're portrayed in the film. This is really effective because it's interactive as it allows the audience to ask questions about the film and the characters, involving the audience means the producers make sure they have the feedback they need for the film. This clip is found on Youtube which is again cross promotion (synergy) as Youtube promotes both the film trailer and the music from the album, because Youtube is a really popular website it helps promote the film worldwide thus attracting a world wide audience, therefore promoting the film through Youtube is really effective.

Broadcasting media is used through the TEDx lecture, this lecture is where Plan B expresses his feelings, beliefs and political views, he also talks about his film and what he wanted to the outcomes to be from the film. From listening to the lecture the audience start to understand what type of man he is which is really effective because it attracts the audience to find out more, because Plan B's such a nice person the audience all most feel sorry for him and his childhood which again could attract people to watch his film to almost taste his background and how he was brought up like for example being kicked out of school and not being accepted in any other which lead to him going to a pupil referral unit called the Tunmarsh Centre in Plaistow.   Plan B explains how he looked up to famous rappers, how he raised himself through music because he didn't have anyone which almost pulls on the audiences heart strings which almost forces them to find out more through watching his film. His upbringing encouraged him to become a soul/rapper artist, instead of grime/rap music as that shows an negative image which therefore gives the audience a chance to discriminate young youths. Plan B then explains how he hates how the media and society have portrayed young children as it straight away gives others a negative view on them. Plan B also says the only way to attract the youth's audience to then engage them is through music as they can relate to it better. Plan B's audience have similar features and views as himself which works well as he knows what they like and dislike, he knows how to attract the audience.

Now think of how the producers are communicating with audiences across the 3 platforms: What are the differences?

The producers communicate with the audience across the three platforms by informing, entertaining them and through social networking sites. Print is more to inform the audience about the film for example reviews are made to inform the audience how good or bad the film was and if people should spend their money watching it. Broadcasting is more entertaining the audience through talk shows where they can interact with the audience, talk shows also inform as they normally interview the actors to find out more about themselves and so on. E-media is more escapism and social interaction, websites such as album ratings where the audience can rate the album not only involves them but also is great feedback for the artist in this case Plan B.

Audience theories you could research and apply to your film case study:

  • Uses & gratifications
  • Social demographics (ABC1 = Middle class; C2DE = Working class)
  • Mode of address
  • Narrowcasting
Uses & Gratifications
-Entertainment, while the audience watch or read the media products they'll feel more relaxed and entertained.
-Identity, from watching the film the audience might be able to relate to the characters for example a lot of the characters in Ill Manors is from when Plan B was young and what he witnessed.
-Escapism, When you watch the film you almost forget about your own problems and get caught up by the drama the audience is watching.

Social Demographics - Primary audience
C - E, D, C1, C2 - represents the working class in society and Ill Manors reflects this.
A - 18 to 34 years old as the film contains a lot of swearing, violence and sex scenes.
G - Males as in the film the male gender is more dominant which would attract them to the narrative.
E - Black and white people as the film shows them more than any other race.
S - Heterosexuals because the film doesn't include any homosexuals for the audience to relate to.

MEST1 Cross Media Study ..

How are texts in the three platforms constructed?

How is the film promoted through print, broadcasting and E-media?

The producers promote this film really effectively through billboards, posters, magazine reviews on the film and album, articles and others, this therefore allows the audience to research the narrative of the film to then go watch it. Having reviews such as:

Helps the audience understand if the film is worth watching or not. Print media I don't think is as successful as many teenagers and young adults go online, a lot of the newspapers are now also put online because people don't read newspapers, especially the audience made for Ill Manors. This review has all good feedback on the film, explains how the film is all true and is something everyone should watch, the website also speaks about the film, where it was set and some of the characters in the film. From reading the review many people would be attracted to watch this film especially if they can relate to some of the characters or if they like these sorts of genres. The review also speaks about Plan B's past, when he was smaller and how a lot of Ill Manors is based on real events. The websites also contains links to twitter and facebook which also works well because it attracts teenagers and young adults.

The producers have made so many broadcasts to promote the film Ill Manors for example, the DVD made into blu ray, chat shows like the Jonathan Ross show, the red carpet premiere and others. This all helps promote the film as it attracts people to if not go watch it but to research it and find out what it's about to then go watch it. Listening to chat shows or in this case a concert is really effective as it appeals to the audience. This concert helps not only promote the film but also the album which is called synergy where Plan B uses his music career to promote his film. Plan B raps all his music from the Ill Manors album which therefore informs the audience about the film and some of the characters which therefore attracts a wider audience as many people might be able to relate to the charactersOn another point, other broadcasts which helped Plan B promote his film for example, the Jonathan Ross show which is interactive and thus is really successful as it involves the audience which is really effective as it therefore shows Plan B what the audience think of the film which is really important as the film is made for them. The red carpet premieres are also really effective when promoting the film as it shows how good the film was, the characters are introduced which also appeals to the audience, especially if the characters have their own fans (star appeal) because of past successful films.

Using E-media to promote to a younger audience is really successful as the internet is something all teenagers and young children go on. The genre of the film which is a low budget urban drama also connotes why promoting the film online would be really effective. Plan B for example has social networking sites such as facebook and twitter promoting his film which by itself is really effective as it appeals to the right audience and it's completely free and as the film is low budget they wouldn't have had enough money to promote in the same way as a big Hollywood blockbuster. The website is based on the album, all the links on the top are based on the album or the film which is cross promotion (synergy). On the top corner of the website are small links to facebook, twitter and youtube, this is really effective as it links the audience straight away to other E-media promotional sites.

Now look at each platform individually, what type of media language does the platform use? Identify the codes and conventions of that platform. Think about how that platform uses genre codes. Are there any similarities or differences in the way the film is promoted within the platform?

Typical codes and conventions of print media, interviews, reviews of the film which provides information on the narrative, the genre, the cast and certificate. A lot of the interviews include famous star or directors, this allows the audience to get to know the stars of the film, interview with the director would give the audience an insight to the background of the film thus attracting a lot more people. Reviews of the film would contain images of the film which would attract many people as the images look interesting thus attracting the audience to find out what the films about to therefore go and watch it. A lot of print media is targeted at an older audience as they'd prefer to read whereas a lot of E-media would be attracted to a younger audience. All the print media's made are used to targeted different audiences, for example articles from the Guardian would be attracted to an older audience whereas a review on the album would most likely be attracted to a younger audience, an audience that would listen to that genre type of music.

Typical codes and conventions of broadcasting would be TV shows, chat shows, background clips on the making of the film, Both radio and TV usually offer an exclusive interview alongside clips from the film which would attract the audiences attention. Broadcasting also includes interactivity with the audience which is really good feedback because then Plan B get to know how the audience feel about the film.

Typical codes and conventions for E-media would be instant offering interaction with a rang of video clips, blogs, audio articles and competitions, all these examples are made to attract different audiences to then go find out what the film is, once they understand the narrative they'd be more persuaded to watch the film. All the platforms put together help gain a wider audience of different ages but mostly targeted at the age group of 18-32 years old, because the film is promoted through all media platforms a lot more people would be attracted to watch it, a lot more people would be aware of the film.

When thinking about promoting Ill Manors, a lot more of E-media was used as the target audience for the film are more attracted to the internet than print media, broadcasting platforms promote the film through Plan B with interviews and chat shows with him which basically gives us an insight of Ill manors and Plan B's believes and ideas of the film. E-media promote the film through the album, so many websites are based on Ill Manors website and the background of the album, because the album is linked to the film it's cross promotion, the albums used to promote the film through E-media (synergy). Lastly, print media promotes the film through reviews of the film, this then attracts the audience, if the reviews are all positive it persuades the audience to watch the film.

MEST1 Cross Media Study ..

Film Media in context ..

How does the industry promote the film to audiences using:

Print media ..

This billboard is part of the print side of the platforms. The title to begin with is big and bold, in capitals which are really effective as it pulls the audience's attention from far which therefore attracts the audience to watch the film. Also, people who see the billboard might find interest, having the title in big bold font helps the audience to go home and research it thus find out what it's about to then go and watch. The release date hasn't got the best placement however as it's one of the only things in red behind a black and white background, this is really effective as it stands out and captures the audience's eyes. The release date is really important as it gives the audience the time of when it's coming on. The image is of Plan B smoking sitting on a wall with a skyline view of estates. The image is really effective as it narrows the narrative down completely. Showing Plan B on the front would attract a lot of his fans, this film also helps Plan B to become more known within the music industry using cross promotion (Synergy). He uses mise-en-scene through props really well with Plan B smoking as it hints the film genre isn't going to be something for children but about real life, the other image on the side is used as weapon because it's sharper than a knife and it's used to line up cocaine and other drugs. Having this in big bold red not only hints what type of film this is but also pulls the audience's attention, especially people that have used this weapon before.

Broadcast media (TV/Radio/DVD) ..

Jonathan Ross introduces Plan B as a multi-talented - singer, song writer, actor and also a movie director which he also wrote, he describes Ben Drew as the most interesting artist around, this attracts many people into listening to his music which is really good for his career. The Jonathan Ross show is a hit TV programme and for Plan B to get such a good compliment helps him become more famous and well known. Plan B believes rapping is poetry and there's a big mis-conception about hip hop music because of the way it's sold in this country. Ill Manors and the new album, many people have started to listen to it because it's ironic, it allows people into the real world of hip hop - didn't believe his album could go number 1. H explains how music brought him up and hip hop raised him. Plan B feels that the kids in his high school are disadvantaged as the kids haven't has a good education which makes them feel like they're not worth anything and when they walk out of school and see what the media says about them that they're not worth anything that teenagers are chavs and scum. Society read the newspapers and believe kids are bad and when they come across a teenager they already have s preconception about them. Plan B speaks about his hero's and who he looks up to, The prodigies, Liam Gallagher, Roy Lichtenstein, Michael Cane and someone really important to him since he was a child Rolf Harris, he explains that when Rolf Harris spoke to him he had tears in his eyes and told Plan B that he inspired him to write music again. Plan B explains the experience as overwhelming, strange and surreal.

E-Media ..

"NME First For Music News" is a website made just for music news and other information occurring music. Plan B made the album "Ill Manors" the website then wrote an article about it and gave it a rating of 8/10. Underneath the name Plan B - Ill Manors it says "A good move to gritty narrator of inner-city deprivation." The website also has a link to Amazon where you can go buy the album which is really effective as it attracts people who read the news on this website all the time. People who find the article interesting or is curious about the album can then easily go and buy it. Underneath the album image there's information about the album, the release date which is important ad I mentioned above, the producers which brings many fans, people who like Plan B's other album, the information also contains the label which is Atlantic, this could attract a wider audience as many people might like that label because of it's previous work. The website speaks about Plan B's last album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" and how it was a soulful, concept album which made Ben Drew a commercial success. Then his second album which is a compliment to the film Ill Manors. The album and film both speak about young peoples lives and what they go through, the songs move back and forth across generations explaining the story but from different points of views. For example "Deepest Shame" which is based on the character Michelle in the film, who was abused as a child and is now prostituting for spare change or Chris in "Drug Dealer" who was forced to hang out with the ex-FN supporters while his mother had sex with the dealer for drugs. They're all victims of their environment "enslaved in their circumstances." Then the rest of the songs speak about the characters of David Cameron and his "rubbish work". The website argues if you've suffered from similar stories then listening to the album might not be recommend but Plan B believes it doesn't matter as music should make you think. The underneath they ask you to rate the album which I think is really effective as it gets the audience involved (interactivity) and Plan B gets feedback on his album from the people that actually matter as they're listening to it. Finally on the website there's a clip behind the scenes of Ill Manors and Plan B explains that with the album he was supported, many people helped him but the film he had to work alone because he didn't have experience. Underneath is a behind the scenes Ill Manors making where he starts to explain how he had support with the album because he already had experience however when it came to the film no one wanted to take a chance on him because he didn't have much experience. Overall the website is really effective because it gives the audience a say, it analyse the album and each song, it has a lot of information which is really helpful when wanting to research the film and the album and since it's a website about music it's more reliable.

Now look at each platform individually ..

What are they key issues and changes taking place in each platform and how is each platform responding and adapting to these issues and changes?

The key issues and changes taking place in each platform - print, e-media and broadcasting are, for example print media isn't instant like E-media, TV's have become less dictated by scheduling and now you can watch a lot of the programs online, E-media's less private, people are bombarded with information from such social networking sites. From the technologies changing and getting better the media platforms have had to change to adapt and still stay popular for the audience, as the technology changes so does the audiences attitudes towards the media for example, many people rely on the internet to catch up on their shows and the plus one channels so watch what they've missed.

Interviews with Plan B - Institutional Profiles

Progress Report - 15th January (Pre-Production)

Mise-en-scene Task

After school we decided to go scout for locations in Northolt to film our production, we took pictures of different places which could have worked for our production. We then planned how everything would unfold which was really helpful because we could visually see everything falling into place. We then met up with some characters and took pictures of them in the location. On the double lesson - the 17th of January we took the rest of the pictures then we uploaded all the pictures of the characters and locations, Navneet and I then started to analyse each image, I then helped Anita with the storyboard as it's 11 pages, Anita then took them home to finish. We then set ourselves a task for the weekend to complete all the pre-production tasks, Anita would complete all the storyboards, Navneet would complete the locations analysis and I would complete the character profiles. Once that all is complete we will print out a 3 copies for each person in our group.

Progress Report - 19th January (Pre-Production)

Mise-En-Scene Planning - Characters Profiles

For the Mise-en-scene task we all decided to work together for this part as it involved all of our input so we decide we would all go out and find a location, our location which I found was in Northolt, we took pictures of different setting in that area to then decide which location would be best to film. We then took pictures of our characters, our main characters and our characters that would be in our title sequence.

I've just completed the Mis-en-scene task of the Characters profiles and Navneet's completed the locations analysis. Anita in the middle of the storyboards, the storyboards is around 11 pages and she still need to complete the storyboard for the title sequence hence Navneet and I are completing the title sequence.

Ill Manors Case Study ..

Researching using Case Study ..

Print ..

To promote Plan B's film he used all 3 media platforms to get the film across to everybody. This billboard is from the print side of the platforms. The title to begin with is big and bold, in capitals which are really effective as it pulls the audience's attention from far, and if someone drives past they'll still be able to read it. This therefore attracts the audience to watch the film. Also, if someone sees the billboard and think's the film looks interesting, having the title of the film in big bold capital letters would help them to remember the name to therefore go home and research it thus finding out what the film is about to then go and watch it.

Then on the bottom is the release date which isn't the best placement as it's really important for the audience however it's in bold red letters, the only text on the billboard with red colour which therefore might even attract the audience first. Having this information in bold red letters while the rest of the billboard (apart from the other image) is in black and white is really effective, as it attracts the audience to look at the release date straight away which is important to therefore go and watch. I also feel billboards are helpful to find information about the film that you're not sure about.

The image is of plan B smoking sitting on a wall with a skyline view of estates. I think this image is really effective as it basically narrows the film down completely. Showing Plan B on the front cover would attract many of his fans to watch this film, it would also help Plan B to become more famous with his music, using cross promotion (Synergy). He uses mis-en-scene through props really well with Plan B smoking as it hints the film's genre isn't going to be something for children but about real life. The other image on the side that's in red is normally really for lining up cocaine and other drugs, it's also used as a weapon as it's sharper than a knife, having this in a bold red not only hints what type of film this is about but also pulls the audience's attention especially people that have used this weapon or know what it's used for whether it's for drugs or to harm someone.

Broadcasting ..

To start the interview, Jonathan Ross introduces Plan B as multi-talented - singer, song writer, actors and also a movie director which he also wrote. He describes Ben Drew as the most interesting artist around. This on it's own is really effective as it attracts many people into listening to his music, this also is really good for his career, the Jonathan Ross show is a hit TV programme, for Jonathan himself to say Plan B is the really interesting helps Plan B have more publicity and become more famous and well known.

Plan B believes rapping is poetry, and if you don't like rapping you don't like poetry. He also believes there's a big mis-conception about hip hop music because of the way it's sold in this country. He speaks about this new film Ill Manors and the new album, he says many people now have started to listen to his music more because it's ironic it allows people into the real world of hip hop. He said he didn't actually believe his album Ill Manors could go number 1.  He then goes on to say how Hip Hop music brought him up, that music raised him as he was kicked out of school and wasn't accepted in other schools.

Plan B feels that the kids in his high school are disadvantaged as the kids haven't been raised properly and no one shows them love, they feel like they're not worth anything and then they walk out of the doors of their high school, pick up the newspaper and the media's saying they're not worth anything, the media calls teenagers chavs and scum. The society read the newspaper and they believe kids are bad so when they come across a teenager they already have a preconception about them this then leads to the teenagers believing they're not worth anything.Plan B then speaks about the riots, he believes the government haven't done anything to prevent it, Plan B shows true dis like towards the government

Jonathan Ross asks Plan B what hero's has he met as now he's more well known, Plan B answers The Prodigies, Liam Gallagher, Roy Lichtenstein, Michael Cane who he works with. He then says he met Rolf Harris who he looked up to all his life at some awards, Plan B explains that Rolf Harris had tears in his eyes and said how Plan B inspired him to start writing music again, Plan B explains the whole experience as  overwhelming, strange and surreal, he said Rolf Harris was like a granddad to him and Plan B was really touched that he inspired him. To finally end the interview Jonathan Ross say's to Plan B it was really nice meeting you, you're such a lovely man. The shake hands and that's the interview over.

E-Media ..

"NME First For Music News" is a website made just for music news, new information about music albums and so on. As Plan B made an Ill Manors album, this website obviously spoke about it and gave it a rating or 8/10. Underneath the name Plan B - Ill Manors it says "A good move to gritty narrator of inner-city deprivation". It then on the sides shows where to go if you want to buy the album which I think is really effective because, for people who read the news on this website all the time might read the news about this album, find it interesting therefore going onto Amazon to go buy it.

Underneath the album image, there's information about the album, the release date which is important as I mentioned above, the producers which brings many fans, people who like Plan B's other albums or even what he raps about and people who are a fan of Labrinth and his music. The Label which is Atlantic which again could attract a wider audience as many people might like that label because of it's previous work.

The website speaks first about Plan B's other albums, his last album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" was a soulful, if slightly hammy, concept album, which made Ben Drew a commercial success. It then speaks about his second album which is a "compliment" to the film Ill Manors. The website explains how both the film and album tell a story of a group of young people living next to the "billion-pound Olympic village in almost indescribable depravity." The album as a whole, the songs which move back and forth across generations tells the same story but in different points of views. From Michelle in "Deepest Shame" which is a song from the album who was abused as a child and is now prostituting for spare change, Jake in "Playing with fire" who was a little kids tricked into a life of crime or Chris in "Drug Dealer" who was forced to hang out with and ex-FN supporter while his heroin addict mother slept with her dealer. They're all victims of their environment "enslaved in their circumstances." Most of the article speaks about each song and the meaning of them. Each song has a different meaning, some speak about the characters in the film and some speak about David Cameron and his rubbish work.

The last paragraph, where should you listen to the album? the website explains if you've been through what Plan B's been through then you shouldn't listen to it as obviously it would upset you however Plan B says how it doesn't matter because all music should make you think.

Then underneath is a bar and it says to rate the album which I think is really effective for Plan B because he gets to see what people think about this album and it shows that everyone gets to say how they feel about this album. Finally underneath all of this is a behind the scenes Ill Manors making where he starts by saying how he was supported with the album, he had many people who helped him with the album but the film he had to do all alone as no one wanted to take a chance on him, many people believed he shouldn't have made a film. The website then speaks about other things, shows other links and that's the end of the website.

Overall I think this website is really effective as it gives the audience a say, it analyse the album and each song, then towards the bottom it has a video of the making of the album and film. This website has a lot of information which is really helpful when wanting to research the film and the album and since it's a website about music news it's more reliable.

Ill Manors: Research ..

Ill Manors: TEDx Lecture and Website ..

1) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain.

Plan B (Ben Drew), shows in his interview that he actually is a really nice man, he stand up for whats right and hates politics. Plan B had strong beliefs, he believes all youths aren't actually bad, they've just had a really bad life, they haven't been brought up the right way with the right support and guidance. He believes the youths are really just mis-understood and that they can be nice kids once given a try. Plan B himself was neglected when he was a teenager, kicked out of school's and wasn't accepted in any other school thus becoming negative towards people and not listening to adults. He had no guidance as a young teen and raised himself through music, hence the reason why he values music so much because they guided him with  the lyrics of rappers that he liked and looked up to, the rappers he didn't know were his role models.

2) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

Considering the TEDx lecture was shown on "The Guardian" as they claim to have an audience of financially aware individuals with high income which is reflected in his articles about the economy and current finances. Thus connotes that the target audience would be more of the upper class, for demographics it's more of the A/B social economic group as it's higher management such as banker, lawyers, doctors and etc. Also, B contains teachers, creative and media people etc. Psychographics, more of the Aspirers as they seek status and Mainstreamers as they seem more of the rich group. With an audience that supposedly has an income double the amount of a normal payed person they try advertising their news papers in expensive shopping malls, near expensive and well known stores.

From the audience of the music video and film which are more low class, for demographics they would fit in the D/E group as they are unskilled manual workers or unemployed. Psychographics, they would fit in the Strugglers and Reformers as they seek escapism or enlightenment, freedom of restriction and personal growth. The audience of the music video is completely different to the audience of The Guardian because as I mentioned above, the audience for the music video and film are of a lower status, they don't have the same goals as people who are of a higher class. Each group view society differently, the audience for the film are anti government as they hate the government, they feel alienated from society whereas the higher class are happy with the government as long as everything works for them at the end of the day, they're the ones who make up the society.

3) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

Plan B says the media demonized the youth, because the media portrays the youth in a negative way, a lot of the elderly and adults have a mis-conception about teenagers and young adults. The media called teenagers "chavs", December 2004 in national newspapers the word "chav" was used 114 times by many people, the word "chav" used to have a different meaning however now because the media use it in a negative way so often its become a word of insult. The government and police also treat teenagers in a negative way but the media create moral panic which is an intense feeling made by a group of people about an issue that appears to threaten the social order. Stanley Cohen (theorist) came up with this theory after the incidents in the 1960. Stanley Cohen believes the media makes the problems sound even worse than it actually is which is called amplification.

Ill Manors Website ..

On the top of the website it's written "ON BLU-RAY, DVD, DOWNLOAD AND ON-DEMAND NOW” in big bold white letters underneath a plain black back ground which I think is a really good way to attract the audience into buying the products. It's placed on the top which means the producers want that to be the first thing the audience see which all makes scene because buying the product means making more money. Also, a variety of ways to watch the film also attracts the audience because not everyone can buy the film so maybe downloading it would work better for them thus creating a selection of choices for the audience, therefore creating a much world wide audience.

On the side of the website they've made a banner which the title of the film and the directors name Ben Drew, but they've also put the name "Plan B" which is cross promoting (synergy) using his music career to promote the film and using the film to promote his music career. Underneath are the buttons that you can click on which will then take you through the website. I think having the buttons on the side works really well because it doesn't distract the audience from the main attraction which is the images and titles as mentioned above. The buttons have the same font with the thick bold white lettering. The first button named "Trailer" once clicked on takes you to the trailer of the film thus attracting the audience to come watch the film. Underneath that button it's the "Synopsis" which basically gives you the plot of the film, it also mentions Ben Drew and his music career with again is cross promoting this music and film career. It says "Narratively linked through original music from Plan B himself" which again shows that Ben Drew used his film to promote his music album.

There's a button called "Videos" and "Stills" which is all about the characters, meeting the characters, getting to know who they are in the film. The last video shown is a music video by Plan B which is obvious cross promotion (synergy); he cleverly takes advantage of the film to promote his music career and vice-versa. The still images is really good as it shows facial expressions which hint the film isn't a joking fairy tale but is a serious, reality of teenagers and what they go through. The second image of the woman with the messed up nose shows that there is violence in the film and her facial expression shows that she doesn't want to be where she is; maybe she's been dragged into this life because of life circumstances. Also, throughout this film they have both White and Black people but also Asian people which are really effective as they don't stereotype races like the media and government do. They have one of the main stars who are Asian which is really effective as it attracts more people, people who can relate to the characters or even people from the upper class who want to view life from different perspectives.

The next buttons "Buy Now" and "Links" are about buying the DVD as that's one of the options to watch the film. A box comes up which shows the DVD image and where to go to buy it, thus making it very helpful for the audience to buy the DVD. It shows two websites to go to in order to buy the DVD's therefore making the website really useful when wanting to find information about the film or the director’s music career and his albums. The links button is about following them on twitter or liking their page on facebook which again is an intellectual way to make the film known, especially as it's a low budget British Film and they didn't have enough money to promote the film. Then again as the films made for teenagers, promoting it online using social networking sites is a really effective way to attract the right audience.

Second last button named "Reactions" when you click on the button a big poster comes up and everything else on the website gets dark so you can't see it thus forcing all your attention on the poster of the film which again promotes the film but this poster also had peoples reaction to the film and the ratings, on one side shows famous music artists opinions which would attract people because if a famous music artist says the film's a must see it would bribe the audience to watch it, especially if the person is a big fan of the artist that loved the film (star appeal). On the other side is the poster you see normal film reviews with all 4 or 5 stars. For someone who hasn't seen the film and wants professional opinions this website would be really useful. Overall the poster works really well as it not only cross promotes the film with his music career but also attracts many people into watching this "Absolute Must-See!" film.

The last button says "Album" which is basically showing Plan B's album and where to go to buy it, if you click on the links it takes you to the websites to buy the album. The fact that this website is for the movie but still has a button just for the album highlights just how much they take advantage of synergy to promote both the film and Plan B’s music career.

The background images show the main characters ad what they’re about for example you see Kirby holding a gun to someone and if you've seen the film would understand that’s the type of character he is, showing the gun also connotes the genre of the film which is a British drama. The image with Kirby also shows Ben Drew in the background on a poster which is a type of identity to highlight who made the film. Also you see the fence full of blood which again is a dominant representation of what you would see in the violent genres. The image shows the main characters at the front and the others in the background thus helping the audience to see who the main stars are however as the actors aren’t famous I don’t think the producers could use star appeal to attract the audience. From their facial expressions and the man tied up on the pole you can see the film isn’t a joke, it looks serious and violent which again confirm the genre of the film, the colour of the image is black and white which adds to the dull and serious feel the film gives. Finally, when you open the website the first thing you see is the house, on the house is graffiti which says “Ill Manors Buy Now”, this I think is a really successful way to attract teenagers as that’s what a lot of teenagers can relate to. They also show Aaron which could connote that Aaron is one of the main characters in the film hence he’s the first to be seen buy the audience.

Lastly, on the bottom on the website shows all the institution information for example the distribution and production information which works really well as it’s not in the way of anything but is still placed somewhere everyone can see. The institutions are really important as it gives the background and making of the film, it shows the production company which is BBC Films, this shows that the film is a low cut budget British film. The distribution company is Revolver, this company also distributed well known popular films such as Anuverhood and Kidalthood which therefore might attract the right audience who are familiar with the type of films Revolver distribute. As the film’s a British low cut budget film they needed as many distribution and production companies to support them in order to make the film a complete success.
