Ill Manors Trailer Analysis ..

Analysing Ill Manors Film Trailer ..

Ill Manors film Trailer consists of taglines, release dates, credit block- institution information such as directors name, production and studio involvement, companies who fund and distribute the film, reviewers quotes with the ratings, main stars and the title of the film. Each of these conventions are really important as they help identify what the product is, this information gives the audience the background story and the making of the film which in some cases attracts a wider demographic

Ill Manors uses the tagline in the beginning effectively "We are products of our environment. Some environments are just harder to survive in." as it appeals to the audience and raises questions which attract the audience. The tagline connotes some places are harder to live in than others, estates with people selling drugs and having fights is much harder to live in than a calm and friendly place. The font of the tagline is  bold striking white behind a black background which makes it standout and because it's the only thing the audience see it means all the attention is focused on the tagline thus making the audience think about the film once read the tagline.

The release date is shown right at the end as the producers want it to be the last thing the audience see so it remains in their heads still with the white bold font in front of the plain black background. Underneath the release date are links on how to like or follow them on facebook and twitter which promotes the film through E-media this therefore is really successful as they want to attract a young audience, teenagers.

Ill Manors trailer distributor was Revolver Entertainment, the fact that this company is the distributor is really effective as they also funded for films like Kidulthood and Anuvahood which were box office hits and made a lot of revenue. Trailers are normally made and released on a reel (DVD) to he shown in rental stores for the audience to view them. Or some film trailers are put on apple.com website as long as the distributors pay for it. Ill Manors uses these conventions, they show the distributors company after showing a small clip of the film which straight away pulls the audience in. The trailers then says "From Visionary Artist - Plan B" which is really effective when wanting to attract a wider audience and helps Ben Drew promote his music career as well as the film (synergy) it's a form of cross promotion, also the location of the launch party they had to release the album fitted the concept of the film again cross promotion.

As the films a British low budget production they can't afford to hire famous main stars. Hence this film doesn't have famous Hollywood actors and actresses. Most of the actors and actresses are unknown and half of them must be doing this film for free, they might just want to get noticed. However if they could afford to hire famous actors it would attract the audience through star appeal. Many actors have their own fans and if they play in the film it would not only attract people who like the urban genre but also the people who like the actors films.

As all media products made have an audience in mind. The audience psychographics for Ill Manors would be reformers and strugglers and demographics from the age group of 18 to 34's both men and woman as the film promotes woman just as bad as men especially as the trailer shows two girls having a fight. The audience class for the film would fall into the group of D/E however, many people from the group of A/B's could be interested as they might find it interesting to view life through different eyes, a different observation.

Ill Manors again is really effective when appealing to the audience, mise-en-scene is used through costume with the hoodies, dark cloths and hats, this all connotes a dominant representation, a negative and anti feel towards teenagers, kids who feel alienated from society thus appealing to the audience because they might be able to related to them. The props, the gun and the display of drugs again appeals to the target audience they want, as it's typical stereotypes of teenagers who live in estates, Medhurst theory.

The trailer is made really well with the quick cuts and fast movements, they've used all the action parts of the film for the trailer therefore making it look exciting and interesting thus appealing to audience which like the violence. The trailer uses montage editing which means it doesn't show the film in order, they've used clips from the whole film. The film leaves enigma codes which leaves hints and clues of the narrative thus, making the audience desperate to watch it to find out what the film's about, Barthes theory. In the beginning of the trailer you hear a Kirby's voice as he explains his relations with Chris, all the music and shouting in this part of the trailer is diegetic. This shows that because Kirby starts by telling the story, he's one of the main characters. Then someone else's voice starts to narrate, as they're talking the music is still playing in the back then when they show the action Plan B's song from the album starts playing which again is synergy as he's cross promoting both his film and music career. All the music played is parallel as it fits really well with the action shown.

The genre for this film is Crime Drama, the genre's been represented through a lot such as the music, camera editing, settings, colours, lighting and the characters. The verse from the music lyrics played "We're all drinkers, drug takers every single one of us buns the herb". You see during the trailer people dealing drugs and drinking. As I mentioned above the music is parallel to the film because it all fits together, to be honest both the song and film compliment each other again cross promotion. The camera editing also represents the genre effectively as the fast pace shots adds to the dramatic feel thus making it look more exciting and entertaining. The location of the film is set in a East London estate, and even during the launch party of album, the location which was in a car park at night fitted the concept of the film, again synergy, it also fits the genre of Crime Drama.

The colours and lighting both also help represent the genre as, they use a lot of dark colours and not many bright lights except the natural sun light but they've put a lot of the bright shots in black and white to give it that dull, negative look which again represents the crime drama genre. Finally, the characters themselves all wear a lot of dark colours to blend it and not be so noticeable, the film has a lot of black people fighting and selling drugs which is a dominant representation on how black people are portrayed in the media nowadays but also represents the genre of crime drama.

Ill Manors Film Research ..

Ill Manors Film ..

- Research all the institutions involved in the production of Ill Manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was ..
Directed: Ben Drew - A music producer who made the film Ill Manors and then made the album and sound track that goes with the film.
Producer: Atif Ghani
Distributor: Revolver - Revolver is a entertainment industry, a marketing-lead, all rights film distribution company, they also distributed successful films such as "Anuvahood" and "Kidaulthood".
Studio: Film London - The capital 's film and media agency. Making London a major international film making and film culture capital; BBC Films - featured film making arm of the BBC and produced or co-produced some of the most successful films such as "Fish Tank".

- How much Ill Manors cost to produce (it's budget)?
£100,000

- How was Ill Manors funded?
The BBC Film company normally on a average give around £4 million to the films they produce. Meaning the rest of the films money came from the directer Ben Drew also known as Plan B. In order to complete the film's post production the distribution rights were sold to Revolver Entertainment.

- What is the target audience of Ill Manors?
I would think the demographics for this film would be people in the D / E groups, young teenagers to young adult's, people who are unemployed or students who don't have a jobs because they're still under full time education. I also think the psychographics of this film would be targeted at strugglers as they feel alienated from society and can't really do much. Also, reformers as they wan't freedom of restrictions.

- Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributors are Revolver Entertainment.

-How was Ill Manors promoted?
Plan B used this music career to promote the film by promoting the music album and sound track that was made after the film was made. Also, by doing live concerts and performances of the songs from the film and album. He then had a album launch party, the location also helped promote the film as it was set in a underground car park and Labrinth said "it's like a dungeon, but it works with the Ill Manors concept".

- Compare this with a big budge blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
- Ill Manors compared to Fast 5:

The actors in Ill Manors aren't as known as the actors from Fast 5. Ill Manors can't afford to have car crashing, banks being knocked out and trains being destroyed, whereas Fast 5 can because they have a big budget. The locations of Ill Manors is on a estate and Fast 5 is set in Rio and has different locations within Rio. Fast 5 has a lot more audience viewers as it's the 5th film they made. Somethings they have that are similar is the concept, crime .. Fast 5 as the main characters plan to steal $100 million off a corrupt business man and Ill Manors isn't as big but has people stealing off one another and the film's based on the 2011 riots with the teenagers looting London.

- How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques?

The trailer hooks audiences into the narrative because it looks exciting and entertaining. The editing is really effective with the use of quick shots as it adds to the action which is entertaining for many people. The song played at the end is all parallel and it's catchy. It sticks in the audience head, as the directer is a music producer it appeals to the audience which makes them want to watch it. Finally, the content of the trailer, Mise-en-scene .. the costumes with the hats and hoodies appeals to teenagers because that's what they can relate to, the violence is another thing most of the kids from the estates can relate to. The propps for example the gun and the drugs shows the film will be entertaining and will attract many teenagers. Mostly boys, however the trailer also shows women involved with the violence. Another reason girls would be attracted to this film is because a lot of the male actors are good looking, girls are attracted to the bad boy type thus appealing to girls as well as boys.

- How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?
Ask sir ..

- Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
15 certificate: Strong violence- could be a lot and sometimes there is stronger language but not a lot, strong language, sexual activity- is allowed however any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification, drug taking- is allowed however must not promote or encourage drug misuse. misuse of drugs such as solvents is unlikely to be accepted in a 15.
18 certificate: Very strong violence, very strong language, strong portrayals of sexual activity, strong blood and gore scenes, real sex- very strong, crude and explicit sex references are permitted.

Preliminary Exercise Evaluation ..

Evaluation ..

My Preliminary exercise consists of a short opening of a girl who walks up to her friend and admits she's done something but doesn't say what she's done. I worked in a group with Anita and Navneet and from reading the preliminary brief it was clear we had to make something exciting so as a group we all came up with the idea of "Murder" it was exciting and would grab the attention of the audience straight away.

"Murder" starts with a girl walking down the stairs with a scared but lost look on her face. You can tell straight away somethings wrong which would appeal to the audience as they would want to know what's going on. The brief mentioned Match on Action which is continuity editing and I think my group has done that really well as it all made sense and it worked really well. We tried to use as many shots as we could such as, close-up, medium shots, long shots and a point of view shot. The brief didn't mention anything about camera movement so we didn't focus on that as much as everything else.

One thing that we defiantly learnt from the preliminary exercise is how effective it to film in a quite area. As  we watched the film it was clear just a little bit of sound really makes a difference. The audio was really bad, needless to say it was all diegetic as it all came from the canteen making it not our fault. The timing and pace in one shot didn't fit as it was too fast and the shot that followed it was too long. Also, the 180 degree rule was correct and was done well but the framing of the shot was good because it involved the background more than the actual person.

On the other hand, the acting was good which is really important as it engages the audience. The continuity editing was really good as it worked well, it explained the story without the audience getting confused, and there was a lot of shots with makes it more entertaining to watch, for example if the actual sense was boring but the camera shots were really well and looked exciting it would keep the audience involved. We really thought the storyboard was helpful because there came a time were we didn't know what we were doing so we referred back to the storyboard and the shot list helped us make sure we go enough shorts when it came to editing, because we had the shot list it made everything much quicker when we was filming because we already new everything we had to do and all the shots we needed.

The close up of the pen dropping was to create an enigma code, as her facial expression and the pen dropping makes the audience think. We used the props (Mise-en-scene) which was the pen effectively to help create the enigma code. The audience would want to know what's happened then it goes back to the the murderer with her face in her hands which shows something wrong or shes don't something.

I feel, throughout this exercise my group and I have learnt new things which will help us when it comes to the real product and the small things that no one focuses on is really important because it can cause a big problem when editing. Overall, I think we all worked really hard to get it complete, well all had different but really good ideas.

Ill Manors: Music Video ..

Ill Manors: Music Video ..

Research on The Ill Manors Tracks and Soundtrack Album ..

Ill Manors is a soundtrack album by British musician and rapper Plan B it's a hip hop protest song. The sound track was released on 23rd July 2012 as the soundtrack to the film with the same name. Several songs were used in the film Ill Manors, some songs played on the film were actually completed after he release of the film.

The record was mainly produced but Al Shux and Plan B and also features collaborations with Labrinth and others. Ill Manors debuted at number-one on the UK Album Charts and received positive reviews by critics. The album was then nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

The film Ill manors was written as a "Hip hop protest song for the 21st century with mixed elements of both crime drama and music video sequences. Plan B from beginning wanted to narrate the film with a different song for each different story however some songs were written later such as Ill Manors.

The album would be released on May 7 through the American company Atlantic Records (a subsidiary of the Warner music group conglomerate). Ill Manor is a low budget film which was also directed by Plan B.

The Telegraph says the soundtrack on a production level is "cutting edge" and on a lyrical level the lyrics are "brutally brilliant" and how it will melt your ears and your heart. Many other critics have good reviews but this one stood out because they say the lyrics will melt your ears and your heart, this all makes sense because a lot of the lryrics are strong such as "Get away with murder in the schools, use four letter swear words coz we're cool, w're all drinkers, drug takers every single on of us buns the herb, keep on believeing what you read in the papers council estate kids, scum of the earth". These lyrics are really strong and challenges dominant stereotypes, challenges what the media say about young kids who live in estates.

The band made approximately 5,000 sales, According to the Official Charts Company Ill manors artist album has been placed on the top with the other really famous artist like Jennifer Lopez. So Plan B is on a maximum of 23k so far, hopefully looking at sales of 35k-40k.

Section A Styled Question ..

Media Forms: What techniques does the video use to establish the setting and engage the audience?

Ill Manors music video is really effective as a protest song, they use Mise-en-scene really well as the clothing they where are all hoodies and bandannas. You don't see them wearing suits, dressed smartly. The bandannas cover a lot of the persons face, the hoodies also cover their face but is baggy, this all connotes they want to cover their identify and might have something to hide. This all fit with how society see young teenagers. The setting which again is part of the Mise-en-scene is based in a east London estate, the fact that it's based in a estate and the songs based on the 2011 riots connotes the teenagers are to blame for the riots and all estate teenagers are bad. Also, the sound which in this case is the lyrics, they challenge stereotypes "Keep on believing what you read in the papers, council estate kids, scum of the earth" They challenge what the media think of them. As it's a protest song it would all make scene if they challenged society.

Media Representations: How is gender/ ethnicity/ age represented in the video?

Age is represented in this video because while your watching you only see teenagers and young kids who are the rebels, you don't see old wise men, or old ladies. This reinforces the dominant representation that all teenagers are trouble and cause problems. Then you see around two girls and the rest are boys which again reinforces the representations that the media create about teenage boys. The media over exaggerate which creates "moral panic" which basically means the society start to panic and fear the younger aged group and teenagers. Many of the teenagers are represented in hoodies whereas someone like David Cameron who is dressed in a suit and looks smart is a binary opposite of how different statuses and backgrounds are represented in society. You see all the drug dealers which are all men, this again shows how men are shown to be more involved and women just get dragged in. Then the ethnicity, when watching the video you see Plan B who is the main guy then lots of back people, mainly black people. This connotes the dominant representation of black people, Plan B use the black people really effectively to draw attention on the stereotypes about black people which is that they cause problems, he challenges those stereotypes by showing both black and white people causing the problems.

Media Institutions: In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?

This video is typical for a music video as it has the fast cuts which make it more live and entertaining, quick editing which cuts from the riots to them and Plan B singing, the actual content of the video shows it's a music video with the people going crazy, fighting and the two little boys dancing in the front, and obviously the main person who is Plan B who is a rapper. Also, in the beginning of the video it has that parental logo which used for many music video and at the end it has the copy right and says warner music which again shows it's a typical music video. The video values promote Anti-government as it;s a protest song and they don't like David Cameron as shown in the video, support for the working class as many people who live in estates would be from the working class and lower, they have counter hegemonic ideas that basically mean they're against the rich and need more equality in society. I think all this negativity comes from the reaction towards what the media say about them because, like I mentioned above the media does over exaggerate which makes the teenagers angry because it's not all true.

Media Audience: Who does this text/ artist appeal to and why?

The demographics of Ill Manors music video I think is around group D / E as it appeals to more of the working class and people who live on estates, ones who can't afford a better life. The age group would obviously be for teenagers as it's about the riots that many teenagers caused. The video it self shows teenagers and younger, not grown up men or women. As it's many boys in the video, you would think it appeals more to men however, many girls would be attracted because there is some girls but also because some boys in the video are attractive thus, pulling a womanly audience; especially girls who like the "bad boy" look. This video appeals to a wider audience, ethnicity wise it appeals to both black and white people because the video contains both races however it doesn't have Asians, but would still attract them as they might feel pressure from friends to be like that, they themselves might want to be like that. People who also desire, or dream about a different life they could live, a more exciting and entertaining life, escapism. They want to escape into a different life, away from theirs which might be overwhelming and too much to handle.
