MEST2 Initial Thoughts ..

Initial Thoughts

Anita, Navneet and I all are working together for our media coursework to produce a fiction product and a magazine font cover and two pages inside. We will be filming a 2 minute opening sequence of our TV program and it will be a hybrid of Waterloo Road and Misfits. This is because, Misfits is a E4 program and the whole brief is about targeting E4's demographic (15-35) therefore Misfits would be a appropriate TV program to research about. Even though Waterloo Road is a BBC TV program the sotry lines used would be appropriate when we are producing our final product.

Psychographics ..

Psychographics ..

Mainstreamers ..

This is a smoke alarm advert which shows us how you can check the alarm without reaching the button. This suits the mainstreamers as they seek security and conformist. They like to avoid risks which shows that this advert is made for people who like to keep safe and out of trouble. Also, as they like to blend in and avoid confrontation it shows they are protective and a fire alarm is perfect so that they keep safe.

Aspirers ..

I think this advert belongs in the Aspirers group as it says they prefer attractive packaging to the actual product, this advert in different ways demonstrates this with firstly the actual advert, it looks fashionable and attractive. Then the bottle, it looks cute which would attract many people to buy the product and again as it says this group seeks status and care about their appearance so they would have to buy something that looks pleasing.

Succeeders ..

This advert suits the group succeeders as it's a brand choice based on self-reward and quality which is what this group look for. They seek control, a ipad is something that is self rewarding and it's an professional product. Also, this group from the name you can tell they want to succeed in life and buying new, expensive products helps them show they are succeeding. A lot of people who have ipads look rich, they look wealthy which shows the "success" in their life.

Resigned ..

I think this advert suits the group Resigned as it's the old tradition phone brands and that's what that group like. They like to be safe and stick to the traditional brands this group has more of the older age group because in their time they used these products so they know exactly how they work and the faults they don't like trying something new because it might not work which isn't safe.

Explorers ..

This advert suits explorers as it's something new that they're trying with the names on the coffee cups and explorers seek discovery they want to be individuals and this advert is all about individualism. They want to be different to others and try new things, things no ones tried before. They like to take adventures and try different challenges. Starbucks are trying new different ways to sell their coffees and explores feel that's what they want as-well.

Strugglers ..

This is a dream bingo TV advert which shows woman wining money online and being overly happy. This suits the strugglers group as they don't have jobs and aren't very successful. Their brand choice involves impact and sensation which means they like to feel good as their strugglers they don't have much in their life. Also, if you watch the advertisement when they win £15 they get excited as if it's something amazing. This all shows that as their strugglers anything they get will make them happy whereas if it was someone in the succeeders group they wouldn't be amazed.

Reformers ..

This advert is of women having a great time while drinking in the garden enjoying themselves. This I think suits reformers as they seek enlightenment. They want freedom and personal growth. They're anti materialistic but are aware of good taste which suits this advert because even though its branded its a nice wine brand, good taste. Also, as I said they want freedom and they already have attended higher education and selects products for quality and this wine brand is of quality and they can afford it because they've completed all their education.

How could these products be gendered through advertising?

Products Gendered through Advertising

Divine Watch ..

I think this advert is being targeted at Men, as it's looks more manly and expensive. This also could be the case because more men wear watches like that.
However I can't say much about this because like men, women also wear watches whether it's like that or a smaller one.
You could represent this advert in a different way so that it appeals to women by firstly having a woman instead of a man and adding more feminine colour's and then maybe changing the watch for a more womanly one.

Bottled Beer ..

This advert is targeted at Men as it's fosters beer, I think they've targeted men because bottled bear is more of a manly drink and you wouldn't see a young lady holding a bottle of beer. Even the slogans show that foster bottled beer is for men and not women. Drinking beer itself is seen more of a thing a man would drink whereas something like whine would be more appropriate for women because it's seems more classier.

You could represent this in a different way so that it appeals to woman by changing the slogan and images, then changing the whole concept of the TV advert so that it doesn't hint it's a man's drink.

Toilet Paper ..

This advert associates with women as it's with cute dogs which appeals to more of a feminine audience, also the font on the print advert looks elegant and stylish which again attracts women. Also, the TV advert is of one of the cute dogs doing housework which again is what women are represented as - housewives and the other dog going home.

I think if they used something different than cute little dogs they would be able to attract more of a manly audience but then again as toilet paper is a household product many men wouldn't be interested.

Deodorant ..

This advert is more targeted to women as deodorant is something used to keep you clean - hygiene and men are represented as unhygienic. Even though there are deodorants for men there's more for women.

However as there is deodorants for men and women you can't say this products only for women.

Cigarettes ..

This advert is aimed at men as firstly the advert contains the two men smoking and the women doing the gardening. Secondly targeting this at men shows that smoking cigarettes is seen as a manly thing, many people nowadays don't think its right when women smoke which shows if a woman smokes she breaks the typical representation that only men smoke. Overall, i think they've targeted men for this product as it would seem out of place if it was a women smoking instead

Again however, many women do smoke so in order to make this advert appeal to both men and women I think using the advert shown in the TV advert towards the ending would work but also by adding a woman on the print so it brings a wider audience.

Hi-Fi System ..

This advert doesn't show a man or woman which shows that the hi-fi could be used for both genders it doesn't matter. Both men and women can use this product. But then again the colours don't attract much of a womanly audience. Blue and black both are more manly colours so the producers could be trying to hint this product is for men.

You could represent this in a different away which could appeal to more women if you change the colours to more neutral colours which work for both men and women.

Cleaning Product ..

This advert is directed at women clearly as it's a household cleaning product also, the TV advert shows the children first then the woman with the cleaning product cleaning after the children which is a typical representation of how the media sees women nowadays. Also, it would be out of place if it was a man with the cleaning product and the advert might not be as successful.

In order to make this appeal to men you could think about in two ways..
  1. Having a man helping her clean the house and look after the kids .. however I don't think this would attract many men.
  2. Or .. Having a beautiful, skinny yet curvy woman dressed in a "sexy stylish" outfit cleaning the house which would attract men and highlight the stereotype that woman are "sex objects".

Trainers ..

This advert is towards men as the print advert shows men's shoes but also the colours demonstrate that this product is based on a manly audience. Also, the TV advert is of a man running and another man running against him. Nowhere is there a woman shown which again hints that this product is for men. This also goes with the stereotype that men are the best when it comes to sports.

You could make this advert appeal to woman by changing the TV advert and maybe having the man run against a woman. The colours on the print advert could be changed so it attracts women and men, not only men.

Game Console ..

This advert is aimed at woman which when you first think about it looks different however it's woman playing the DS not the PS3 or X Box. This could hint that woman and children play the small consoles but the men and boys are the ones that play the bigger and more dominant game consoles like the PS3 and X Box. Also, the games the women are playing are brain training games whereas the men play killing and shooting games which you don't see women playing. The pint add however doesn't show a man or woman which is good meaning they've tried to have a wider audience; they've tried to engage both men and women.

The TV advert could be represented in a different away which would appeal to men by having a boy and girl both playing on the DS and maybe playing a fighting or killing game.

Airline ..

Finally, this advert is aimed at both genders however, the men are the pilots and the women are the air hosts. This advert is a typical representation of how women and men are presented in the media these days. The men's uniform shows that they have more of the dominant role compared to the women. This backs the stereotype up that men are more powerful to woman. Having the men standing next to all those women and having the power that they have would attracts men as they would want to be like that, that powerful. The air hosts don't have the dominant role which shows that its men that more powerful but even so, the way the women are dressed looks "sexy", they look young and beautiful which attracts not only the men but also the woman as they could want to be like them to have that beauty. The colour red which means lust, love, bold, womanly and also seductive and tempting could back the stereotype that women are "sex objects" but also would attract men to take that airline as the woman look like that, however we all know not all air hosts look like that which shows that this advert bends the ASA guidelines.

Action Film Analysis ..

Knight and Day- Narrative Theories

Todorov ..

Equilibrium- Everything starts off normally for Cameron Diaz ( June), as it's her sister's wedding she wants to get something special for her, on the way back home from her trip she bumps into a running spy named Miller played by (Tom Cruise).
Disequilibrium- During the middle of the film is when the disequilibrium happens, when everybody believes  Miller is dead and June goes back home in time for her sister's wedding. June then comes back to find out what's going on with Miller and jumps into her ex boyfriend who takes her for some pie and that's when Miller comes back.
New Equilibrium- When Miller wakes up in hospital he ask's where June is, the agent tell's him she's gone home and he shouldn't get distracted however when the nurse comes he finds out it's June, she kisses him they both get in a car and drive off with a sign post saying Cape Horn.

Barthes ..

Knight and day opens with Cameron Diaz (June) and Tom Cruise (Miller) in a airport. Straight away they use Barthes theory of action and enigma codes. Something happens with June's flight however Miller successfully goes into the flight but whispers in June's ear saying "Somethings happen for a reason" which hints that he's up to something and June is part of his plan.

However what they both don't know is an agent named Fitzgerald is watching Miller as he's a running spy and becomes under the impression that June is working with Miller. June then starts to understand Miller isn't just a normally flight attender when he kills the few passengers on the plane and lands the planes then runs away.

Claude Levi- Strauss ..

This theory is about Binary Oppositions for example, Hot and Cold are Binary Opposites, it's used for many different reasons such as to create contrast between both the Hero and the Villain

In Knight and Day, the Hero is Miller (Tom Cruise) and the Villain is Jordi Molla who is sort of unknown which just shows how the Villain isn't as important as the Hero

It also makes the Hero look more important.

Propps ..

Hero- Miller (Tom Cruise)
Villain- Jordi Molla
Starts with Cameron Diaz being the Sidekick but then during the film becomes the Princess as she needs saving by Miller.
Donner- I would think the Donner is the person who gives Miller advice or guidance. So I would think the donner in this film is the agent.

Film Language Assessment ..

Feedback from Assessment ..

Grade B

WWW- You make some very good points here and are certainly close to a higher grade: Q2 is strong.
EBI- In Q1 you get a little confused between realism and tension- make sure you answer the question, you also need to check some of the terms you've used (diegetic)
LR- How was the editing used to create realism?

They've used continuity editing for this short clip which is really effective when wanting to create a feel of reality, making the scene much more realistic. All of the short cuts hint the panic and fear in the peoples faces which again also adds to the realism the clip is trying to create. Also, the timing of the shots, some shots jump to next really fast whereas some like when their filming the terrorist jump to the next shot after a short period of time, this therefore not only shows that these men are up to no good but also makes everything feel so real. So realistic. Overall, the quality of the clip is so well edited thus making it look more realistic.

Research On Fish Tank..

Fish Tank Research ..

1.  All the institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.
-      BBC Films- Presents and Funding
-      UK Film Council- Presents and Funding
-      Limelight Communication- Presents
-      ContentFilm
-      Kansander Film Company

2.    Two other independent British Film production Companies-
-       Norfilms is an independent British film and television production company based near Manchester.
-       Coffee Films.

3.  The BBC Film’s is most successful as they also produced famous films like Jane Eyre, West is West and Project Nim.

4.  Fish Tank Budget- $3 million.

5.  Dawn of the Dead, Saw, Oldboy, Battle Royale, Hellraiser:Hellworld.

6.  The production companies BBC Film and Limelight Communication’s funded the film.

7. Other ways British films are funded-UK Film Council, Filmmaking Websites, Funding sources- Local communities.. charities.. helping with festivals, Crowd Funding.

8.  Fish Tank’s Target audience was teenagers 15 and above.

9. Fish Tanks main Distributors- Artificial Eye (UK), Audio Visual Entertainment (Greece), Independent Film Channel (IFC) (Canada)

10.  A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film.

11.  Fish Tank was promoted through the Cannes film festival and the UK film Council.

12. The differences between Fish Tank and a big Hollywood blockbuster film in one the quality of the Camera movements and Camera shots. As Hollywood film’s have more money to budget their films they can spend a lot of money on special effects such as car’s crashing and explosions whereas film’s like Fish tank can’t afford that hence during the film they used steadicam a lot (hand held camera). Hollywood film’s can afford well known, famous actors and actresses however as we’ve seen in Fish Tank they’re all unknown people.

13.  The Fish Tank Trailer is one of the reasons I was looking forward to watching it, the producers used lots of short shots and when it came to the violent parts they made them seem really dramatic using special effects. Also, they use sound really effectively throughout the trailer they use calm innocent music then when it comes to the violent and the doors slamming they over exaggerate the slam. Then you have all the words “All around her”, “Life came rushing in” all this makes the audience feel sorry for her and want to find out exactly what happens

14.  The trailer Balances the plot and spectacle because the way it’s filmed and the sound all is really fast, it happens so fast. The violent parts is over exaggerated which is shown in the film when she kidnaps the girl and throws her in the water, it’s over exaggerated.  The sound also,  sounds innocent then goes loud and fast which shows her life. You feel sorry for her but then you kind of dislike her when she pushes the people that care away and she’s being rude without any reason.

15.  15  classification mean no one under 15 is allowed to watch the film in cinema and 15 and under aren’t allowed to rent or buy the film. 15 classification has a outline of what’s allowed such as Language words like “Fuck” and “Cunt” are allowed and violence is allowed but not too serious that it leads to pain or injury. Also, Drugs are allowed to be shown however the film must not show drug misuse. Now, 18 is more lenient the nudity and language is more explicit.

Film Review ..

Fish Tank Film Review ..

Unloved, lifeless Mia played by Katie Jarvis stars in a BAFTA Award winning film in 2010 named Fish Tank, where Mia discovers her passion for dancing but her life is full of negativity and abuse. She lives in an Essex estate with her tarty mother, Joanne, and intelligent little sister Tyler. Her mother is a careless, useless drunkard who doesn’t pay any interest in her kid’s life but rather focuses her attention on the boyfriend, Conner, who in time is actually a married man with a child. Mia’s life completely changes when the mother’s boyfriend arrives.

Andrea Arnold, the director also directed three short films- “Milk” in 1998 and “Dog” in 2001 and “Wasp” in 2003 which made her become known as the up and coming filmmaker with lots of talent. She then made “Fish Tank”. The film was backed by the Limelight Fund, BBC Films, and the UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund. Because the film was only short in around 50 cinemas she was upset and said, “I definitely feel sorry more people don’t get to see my films. They aren’t inaccessible. I wish cinema owners could be braver, or had more money to help them show films like mine.” She feels really strong about her film Fish Tank because of the meaning behind it. The fact that Mia can’t actually dance but dancing is her only last hope shows that she wants something she can’t have, she’s on the inside looking out and trying to reach for something that isn’t accessible.

During the film her mother says something about Mia never having a boyfriend which shows that Mia hasn’t experienced life properly so when Conner the mother’s boyfriend shows a little interest in her she starts to experience things never before which she likes so she unconsciously craves more and more until eventually she loses it and kidnaps Connors child, in my opinion I feel they go too far because it could really effect someone emotionally.

In the opening scene you see Mia walking around the streets, slurring and shouting abuse at anyone in her radar, In a way you also most feel sorry for her because she’s abused by everyone and no one really cares for her, this also means because she hurt so much she feels she needs to be abusive back so when some tries to help her she doesn’t know how to react thus making her push people away making her feel alone in the world. I really believe she plays her role remarkably as it’s really believable and we almost feel what she does.

Katie Jarvis was actually discovered at Tilbury Town railway station when she was having an argument with her boyfriend across the platforms, she wasn’t attending school and was suffering from unemployed when she was cast in her first film.

The other Characters (such as Conner played by Michael Fassbender, Joanne played by Kierston Wareing, Tyler played by Rebecca Griffiths and Billy played by Harry Treadaway) also add to the realism because they play the roles so well especially Mia’s little sister Tyler.  Tyler really shows us the pain in their life through the language she uses towards her mother. By calling her mother a “tramp” and a “whore” she A, shows her hatred towards her mum and B, shows how she’s been brought up into an abusive life where no one cares for anyone.

The genre of this film is Drama; I feel the mood of this film is negative, depressing and sad. When I think of the drama genre this film wouldn’t really come to mind however this film shows the Drama genre really well as what happens to her is dramatic. Also the film’s rated 15; I agree with the BBFC rating this film 15 as the language used is highly explicit. To be completely honest this whole film is explicit; however the language is very unpleasant and the target audience itself is aimed at teenagers because many people in one or two ways can relate to her as many also have life’s like her, reaching for the unreachable; trapped in a fish tank looking out at the world and wanting more.

Most of the music and sound played was diegetic sound which is understandable as most of the music is played when she’s dancing. I think it’s good there was no non-diegetic sound because it makes the film more realistic. The one song played in the end when the mother and two daughters are dancing in the living room is called “Life’s a Bitch” this song creates a violent, ruff atmosphere; the song almost hints the estate life.
