#2 Case Study - Inception ..

Inception Platform Analysis ..

Print ..

An example of a print media is the Inception film poster, they've used a establishing shot for the front cover which is really effective as the background is the city and towards the back the city lifts up, the image clearly represents Leonardo DiCaprio as the main star which is really effective as it's star appeal, he appeals to many people, a lot of his fans would watch this film just because he's staring init. Behind him are other famous people that have their own fans hence attracting a wider audience. From their facial expressions you can tell the genre's action/sci-fi. All the actors names are written on the top in red, Leonardo's name is written much bigger than the other names which shows just how important he is in the film. The title's written in s big bold red font behind a blue background which is really effective as red contrasts with the blue and makes the red standout. For a film poster this is really effective because the title is something the audience see straight away.

The institutional information is written underneath the title in a blue font behind a dark blue almost black background, the information is really important however not as important as the title hence it's in small font on the bottom of the poster. The poster also has the Warner Bro. Pictures icon which is really effective as it's the company's identity hence it would attract people to go watch the film. The film poster is also shown on the website of the film which is synergy as the film posters being promoted on the website. This is quite similar to the Ill Manors film poster as they both contain the codes and conventions of a film poster however I think the Inception film poster is more effective as it would have been promoted much more than Ill Manors.

The demographics of Inception would be around A and B's as the film's complicated, it requires the audience to use their brain therefore it would be too hard for uneducated people to understand, psychographics wise it would be Explores as they look for new things and this film is different, people might watch this film for entertainment and escapism which comes under the uses and gratifications, people might be tried of their  own problems hence might want to escape into a different atmosphere.

Broadcasting ..

This is an interview with a man called Jeremy Jahns, he's very popular for giving film reviews, someone commented below on one of his interviews saying if Jeremy says the film is bad it must be bad which shows just how famous his film reviews are. He's behind a red background, he starts talking about Inception with the Inception film poster on the side, Jeremy explains how Inception saved people's faith in cinema's. He gives a really positive response to the film which is really effective as it persuades the audience to go watch the film. He claims that the film is one of the best ever made, because his tone of voice is so confident it really hints how good the film is. He doesn't speak about the characters however he mentions how excellent the performances of all the actors were, he gives all the actors credit which not only is effective for their careers but it also re-ensures the audience that the film is worth seeing. Obviously Leonardo DiCaprio is the main star so a lot of the credit goes to him, this fans also would make up a lot of the audience which is really effective. Reviews on youtube are really effective as it allows interactivity with the audience as they can leave comments and their own opinions on the film review. In some ways synergy is used as the film poster is shown on the broadcasting review. Other reviews of Ill Manors were also really positive, they both were given good feedback however Inception obviously had better equipment and famous actors who all have their own fans (star appeal).

E-Media ..

This is a facebook page made for the film Inception, the page contains images of the characters, it mentions when their birthdays are, it also has video's that promote the film, then regular updates about the awards the film Inception has one. This is really effective because it persuades people to watch the film, after seeing how successful the film is they'd automatically feel the need to watch the film. The facebook page also shows other pages that are linked to the film that the audience can like, this therefore is really effective because it allows the audience to look at other important pages that the inception film likes. Underneath the name Inception is written the amount of people that have liked the page which works really well as it persuades the audience or people go watch the film because it's so good. The page also mentions the stars birthdays which is really effective as it gives the fans a chance to get involved and wish them happy birthdays, interactivity. Ill Manors also has a lot of interactivity which is really effective because it allows the audience to almost feel as if they're apart of the film. The producers for Inception wouldn't have needed to make a facebook page as they could afford proper promotion however a low budget film like Ill Manors would need social networking sites like facebook to promote their film.

#2 Inception Platform Analysis ..

Print ..

This review is an example of Print Media, the Empire Magazine give Inception a positive review on the film which is really effective as it attracts the audience to watch the film, the review also gives credit to Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance in the film thus re-ensuring the audience and his fans that they film is a must see. The review is nice and short which again is really effective because it doesn't bore the audience, it cuts straight to the point which is what the audience want; however if the audience do want to read it in more detail they can click on the button that takes them to the full review. The audience can also rate the film and leave their own reviews on the film, their own opinions. On the top of the review the film is rated 5 stars and on the side the stars are explained, according to the explanations Inception's rated as a classic. Therefore, all the small elements that make up the review contribute to a wider target audience.

From the review, all the stars are represented in a positve away therefore helping them with their career. Leonardo DiCaprio however gets the most praise which is obvious as he's the main star, whichout him the film wouldn't be what it is today. This print review is really effective as it cross promotes (synergy) E-media in the sense that there's buttons which take you to the facebook and twitter pages of the film. Both Ill Manors and Inception had positive feedback from Empire Magazine which is really effective for both films.

Broadcasting ..

This movie premiere is an example of broadcasting media, the fast cuts and sound effects in the beginning of the premiere are really effective as it straight away grabs the audiences attention. The premiere interviews the actors and the director asking them questions about the film and how they felt. As the actors speak, their name comes up with their role or contribution to the film, for example the Director Christopher Nolan is the first to be interviewed and his name and contribution to the film comes up which works well for the audience as they might not know exactly what role the actors have in the film for example.

In this review the actors aren't represented in their character roles but really themselves, who they really are which is really effective for the the audience as they get to see what the actors are like in real life and how different or similar they are to their character roles. The movie premiere (broadcasting media) cross promotes with E-media as it's broadcasting on "E" which is also a website that the audience can visit for more information on the film. Also, the premiere's shown on youtube hence linking it with E-media, synergy. The audience have the chance to get involved and give their own opinion on the film, interactivity. Again comparing this premiere with the Ill Manors premiere, Inception's premiere's located in Hollywood and Ill Manors was located in London obviously the premiere for Inception's would be much more expensive to Ill Manors.

E-Media ..

This fan made video is an example of E-media, E-media allows the audience to get involved with the film thus attracting them to watch the film. The video is about Inception's ending and how it should have ended but with a lot of comedy involved thus amusing the audience. The video starts with the man falling asleep and needing to use the bathroom. A train then goes past and he doesn't need to go toilet anymore. The video links back to the real film through the whole video. Further on in the video a character from Ellen Page's previous movie Juno comes in the dream which could attract many people who enjoyed that film when it was new. It also just make's people laugh which is really effective because it attracts the audience, the target audience for that film Juno is also similar to the target audience of Inception.

The fan made video represents the characters in a different way, a lot of the lines Leonardo DiCaprio says in the video links back to the film hence portraying the same type of man in the film; however the other characters are represented in a funny, more interactivity way. As it's a cartoon it's more likely to attract children, as the film is rated 12A, the fan video is probably aimed to people around that age. The fan video is really effective as it attracts many people however it doesn't cross promote to any other platform therefore lacking the full use of attracting a wider audience. Ill Manors however cross promotes in anyway possible, from the film trailer which is broadcasting being on the official website of Ill Manors which is E-media.

Targets:
-Clear, well organised & appropriate communication, Engaged response with fluent use of media terminology.

The trailer which comes under broadcasting media promotes the film in a different way to Print or E-media as it's targeted to a different audience in the sense that the trailer provides escapism which is means if the audience is having a rough time the film helps them take their mind of their own problems and escape to a different atmosphere. The trailer also provides entertainment in the sense that the audience get to watch it instead of reading the reviews, they get a visual idea which would persuade them to watch the film, this theory uses and gratifications by Blumler and Katz was made to find out why audiences many engage with the media.

Watch your film and include details about the:

Inception has one of the most complicated narratives, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character Dom who his involved in making dreams to target people in their subconscious mind to extract information while they dream. Their target is a Japanese businessman, as they travel through dreams to get information out of him, this film get so complicated as they dream, and in that dream they’re are dreaming, the only way to get out of the dream is by falling or by dying however if the person who is dreaming wakes up the dream collapses. Throughout most of the film they use dreams to get information out of this businessman, Leonardo however has a family with two kids, he feels after this one mission he’ll be able to go back to his family, his wife committed suicide because she couldn’t take all the dreaming and now any dream Leonardo has his wife is in them.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character role and is represented in a typical dominant male role, the man in power, in charge of everything. The producers have used mis-en-scene through props to represent Leonardo as the dominant character as he’s always the one carrying the gun, the gun also is a typical genre convention as the genre of this film contains action. In most of the film Leonardo’s represented in a suit, he’s always dressed smart which portrays him in a successful way. They’ve used mis-en-scene through makeup to show his wealth and health, through most of the film he looks clean which shows he has the money to take care of himself, for example he isn’t suffering financially.

In this one clip both Leonardo and another actors is sitting at a cafe talking, they’re set in a dream, the location in that scene is set in a dream which means they control everything that happens in that scene hence the place starts blowing up in different places. She then wakes up and they’re back in the real world, this is really effective as it attracts people to watch it because it’s so interesting. The editing contributes to the action; the long shot is really effective as it shows the audience clearly what’s happening in the scene. During that one scene there isn’t much music which doesn’t really affect the scene as its so interesting music isn’t required.

Most of the reviews on IMDb from the users are positive, the title of the review is called "Nolan's first true master piece" it then starts off with someone explaining how Inception is a "perfect" film, it's "confident" in every way, explains how it's something "refreshing" even more than Avatar. The user then says how the film could only have been made by Nolan, it's pure greatness. The users speaks about the last hour of the film, the editing, how there's action shots in almost all scenes. To fully understand the film you have to pay attention and remember all the layers of what's happening which is what makes it such a brilliant film. The user later on speaks about how the film should change Hollywood that's how great it is, this all is really effective as it attracts many people to watch the film, after reading the review they'd be persuaded to watch it.

What are the main similarities and differences in Inception and Ill Manors?

Analysis of the Website and Trailer ..

The official website: Inception official website ..

The website opens straight away with the trailer, after the viewer has seen the trailer the actual website with the information opens. Firstly I think is is really effective as it almost forces the views to watch the trailer thus attracting them to watch the film. This is also synergy in the sense that the E-Media which is the website helps promote the Trailer which is Broadcasting.

The beginning of the trailer shows the production companies which is really successful as it could attract the audience who have taken a liking to Warner Bros. Pictures through other successful box office hits they might have been attracted to. Then the trailer zooms into the production logo and shows Leonardo DiCaprio covered in snow, the fact that they've shown Leonardo first straight away captures a wider audience (star appeal) many people would want to watch the film because he's so famous and has so many fans, many people might just want to watch the film because he's init, he begins to speak saying "there's something you should know about me", then cuts into him walking while holding a gun which hints the genre could involve some sort of action and says "I specialize in a very specific type of security". Once again a close up the gun then cuts to him saying "subconscious security".

Cuts to a close up of another actor who replies "you talking about dreams?" everything else in this shot is blurred apart from him which means all the focus is on him and what he's saying. The background music is really up built, it keeps the audience alert, keeps them focused, the trailer then cuts to the directors name Christopher Nolan in white, bold science fiction font with a plain black background. It then blacks out and as the music makes that "Doom" sound it says "The Directors of The Dark Knight" in the same font as the directors name, this is really effective as The Dark Knight was a really successful film which many people enjoyed hence persuading them to watch Inception because people can also enjoy this film. The trailer then short shots of action scenes which would attract many people who like all that action with the music which creates all the suspense. Leonardo goes on to say "create the world of a dream" as the city looks as if it's folding up which is really interesting, thus attract the audience to watch the film.

Later on in the trailer shows a close up of Leonardo, close up's are really effective as it shows the facial expressions and in this case Leonardo looks worried, panicked which attracts the audience as they'd want to know what's about to happen. Throughout the whole trailer they've put really short shots which keeps the trailer alive as it would be boring having a shot that lasts up to 20 seconds on the trailer. Leonardo's goes on to say "I think I've found a way home" then shows him holding a woman which would be portrayed as his wife that maybe he lost when he was younger, the voice overs make you think "what does that mean?" it raises questions which is really successful for trailers because it keeps the audiences attention. The fact that they've shown Leonardo holding a woman is really effective as it attracts a female audience as well through the romance of those two characters. Another woman is shown in the beginning of the trailer which shows that whatever the men are doing, the women can do it which would attract a female audience as they'd want to be like the women, dominant.

From then on the trailer is just amazing, the music contributes to the action, the action links to the music, Leonardo DiCaprio's name is shown thus attract even more people, then the trailer shows more action shots,  a shot where an explosive goes off thus attracting people who like those types of action films, Leonardo then says how you feel as if the dream is real until you wake up and you realize it was just a dream. This would confuse the audience therefore making them want to watch it just to understand what they mean, the film plays with your mind and the trailer hints that. You then see Leonardo shouting at someone, this shows his angry side which would attract more female fans of his, he shouts how it was his responsibility which makes the audience think well why is he so angry and what was his responsibility? It raises so many questions hence this trailer is so successful because it creates suspense.

The trailer then shows more science fiction shots of building on the beach falling, people asleep spinning around in the air, this all makes the audience think what's going on? It confuses them thus attracting them to watch the film to then understand what everything's happening. Then the music makes that "Doom" sound and the name of the film comes up "Inception" in a clear science fiction font therefore clearly displaying the genre of the film. The shot changes to someone shooting and another man coming behind him with a bigger gun and shooting which has a better effect that the other persons gun, as the second man shoots the trailer cuts straight to "Coming soon" which is really effective because it's the last thing everyone sees hence it remains in their head for longer.

The website then opens with the front cover of the film poster which is synergy again though E-Media, the website promoting the Film Poster (Print). They've used 3 main colours, red, white and blue which is really effective as all those colours are vibrant and they all work together. Most of the actors are standing there holding guns which shows dominant representations of men, that men are more powerful hence they have to hold the big guns. Also, the title is in a big, bold red being the blue which shows contrast and the opposite of blue is red hence they work well together. All the characters names are placed on the top in red and white again behind the blue background. The music of the website matches the trailer therefore it keeps the dramatic suspense throughout the website as well as the trailer, also when you scroll over the buttons it makes that "Doom" sound which is clear continuity between the trailer and website.

Just on top of Inception is the Menu button, once you've clicked on that it opens 6 more options which are all typical codes and conventions of websites, first button is about the film once you click on the button it takes you through the city of Inception, as it's going through the city it shows you clips of the film which is really effective as it keeps them entertained, it almost flies through it all to get to the page I clicked on to show me the narrative of the film, as the narrative is being explained it also speaks about the institutional information and the director Christopher Nolan. This website is incredibly detailed, it also speak about each character and other films they've played in, it also speaks about them as actors and awards they've one. This is really effective as it would attract a wider audience through star appeal, reading about the actors awards and success would persuade them to watch the film as they're such good actors. The website also shows information about the crew, the people who made the film, as I said above this website has so much information about the film, if the audience have any doubts on the film - the website would clear those doubts, the graphics on the website as so clear, this website is amazing.

The second buttons called "Video" where it shows three trailer and the world premiere, to begin with, this is really effective as firstly it's synergy, putting the broadcasting media on the E-media which is cross promotion, it also attracts more people therefore a wider audience, overall I think the world premiere would attract people more as it's like the review, it promotes the film and you get to speak to the actors, find out how they felt making the film and so on. The three trailers all have the same effect, it's just they all have different feels which is what the audience want, before the audience watch the film they watch the trailers which keeps them entertained, it keeps the audience hyped up, keeps them interested.

The website also had a button named "Downloads" which means the film has spinoff's, which means even after the film's been shown, they still make money through spinoff's in this case they have screensavers from Inception for your laptop or computer. The last button is the Gallery which is basically images from the film, the first image is a close up of the main star Leonardo DiCaprio, obviously they'd want that to be the first image as Leonardo DiCaprio is so famous and you know if he's staring in the film, the film has to be amazing. The other images show a lot of the action or science fiction scenes which again would attract many people as they'd be attracted to all the action as it looks interesting.

Overall, I think the website is amazing, the button in the top corner allows you to make the website full screen which gives the audience the full effect. The website contributes to the film, it cross promotes though E-media and Broadcasting, there's games attached to the website which opens the audience age group more as children can play the games and feel as if they're apart of the film, all the action and science fiction. At the bottom on the website shows a facebook link thus attract teenagers through social networking sites, this film therefore uses all three platforms to the full to promote the film.
